Leadership Lift Off

We are so excited here at RuralScope.  We turn 20 years old in 2020.  We are celebrating by sharing 20 stories across 20 months.  These will include highlights, lowlights and learnings.  A unique insight into our development - personal and business for you.  Our aim is to share learnings to support others who live and work across rural Australia.   

This is our third story in the series and it’s all about how we got into the leadership in agriculture space.  And the people who helped us do it.   

Our first large scale project in agriculture, Dairying Beyond 2000 was coming to an end.  Feedback highlighted our team had led and implemented a bit of a game changer.  I remember being told that the dairy industry had not seen the level of engagement with growers and all across the supply chain as they had seen in Dairying Beyond 2000.  A big tick and confidence boost for us.  I was relieved that the industry’s chance on us had paid off and pleased that I had coordinated a project that delivered direct benefit to farmers, many facing their biggest challenge in generations.  We had tapped into the 3F’s – Farm, Family and Finance and it was the “people stuff” (as many called it) that had left a mark.

Clarity Comes before Confidence

Clarity comes before confidence is a simple concept.  Try putting it into practise and you will find that it's not as easy as it first sounds.  Master the simplicity of it and you will be well on your way to building success in both your work and personal lives. Clarity is all about being coherent, understanding and planning what you want to say before you say it. Knowing what your vision is and then taking the steps to get there.  Being clear about who you are and what is important to you, your team, your business, your project etc, means that you will be able to say no to opportunities that present but don't fit with your direction.  This is a deal maker as so many people talk with me about being over loaded and not even having enough time for themselves.  If you are clear about your focus, vision or future then you will have the confidence to say no and to put in place the actions and steps that really matter. It All Started with Dairy

This is our second story in the series and its all about the very first project in dairy industry and we have never looked back.

 

Two months after starting out in business, I saw an advertisement in the Brisbane newspaper, The Courier Mail.  It was for a Project Coordinator for a dairy industry project.  It was a large feature ad for someone qualified and experienced in project management with experience in the agricultural sector.  Self doubt crept in.  I didn't think I'd get a look in as my experience was in large scale education not agricultural projects. I gave myself a talking to and decided to give it a go!  I hoped being raised on a dairy farm and being involved in a family farming business might count for something.

Do you put off having difficult conversations - at work and at home?  If you do, read on as there is a lot more to mastering difficult conversations than you think.  It's not good enough to have a 'chat' and think you have dealt with 'it'. You need to get your head around what to do before, during and after the conversation.  I recently listened to Rachael Robertson as she shared some leadership tips and tools from her time managing a team to the Antarctic.  I was taken by her authentic and practical style.  But what really clinched the deal for me was how much she cared for her people, her team, her colleagues; and ultimately on a year long expedition to Antarctica, her friends.  Check her out at www.rachaelrobertson.com For now, I want to share her 10 points to having successful difficult conversations.  Give them a go and see how much of a difference it makes.....
